Austin - Day 10 - December 12, 2013

Mid-Day
Well after everything was going so smoothly, things got a little messed up (probably made it a little easier for Austin he had a much shorter wait time in Pre-Op).

There we were in the room waiting and waiting, and the doctors were down in Pre-Op waiting and waiting, we were all wondering what was going on. Turns out somebody didn't put in his transportation order.  When one of the surgeons discovered this he simply went to our room, grabbed a nurse from our floor and wheeled Austin, in his bed, down to Pre-Op.

Our Pre-Op turn around was quite quick but in the process they noticed no one had given him his steroids in the morning (that is a must have but they caught it and corrected it). Because of the amount of time he's had in his given ports for his IVs they told me when he was under they would redo them so he wouldn't have to feel being poked again, and because of the condition of his arms they might also just put a port in his neck. They also noticed a slight rash on his arm which I'm hoping is just nothing but concerned it occurred sometime between this morning and when he got to Pre-Op (he was getting another blood transfusion at the time).

I've received one phone call update, once in the operation room, they've opted for a few extra monitoring devices (not sure what that means) but they told me he did very well, was a very polite young man.

The head surgeon stressed that for ease of recovery he will try the laparoscopic method, if at any time he feels that method could compromise his health, he would simply switch to the larger incision.

If they are able to do it Laparoscopic, it takes a little longer than regular surgery, I'm guessing not to get a final report until around six, and who knows how longer after that before I'll be able to see Austin again, then I'll be very busy getting us settled into our next room.

Haven't heard another update yet, assuming all is going well.

Hugs, Sally

Update 4:30 p.m.
Surgeon just came down, he said it went a lot smoother than what he expected, he only has three little incision marks, spleen is out, he's still in the OR they are wrapping things up, will be a couple of hours before I can see him again.

Update 8:45 p.m.
Now the tough part comes, surgery is rough no matter how big or small the incision is.

Quite surprised when I saw him at a little after 7 p.m. by his face, looks like he had an allergic reaction to something (face is all red, lips are puffy) nobody mentioned that to us. Will try to figure out what went on and what triggered it.

He is sleeping now, we are now in room P662, much more modern than the last room, and bathroom doesn't feel like an ice rink. Don't tell him, I don't have on the History channel.

Could be a long night so I'm shutting down soon, pray that we see the hemoglobin numbers start to come up tomorrow and become more stable. And whatever you do, don't tell him I don't have on the History Channel now.  Hugs, Sally P.S. A big thank you to Angela (daugher-in-law) for spending the day with us.

This picture really doesn't show how red and blotchy his face is but you can see how swollen it is.  They gave us a go ahead to go up to his room but then we had to wait in the waiting area there for awhile.
